The exhibition Clive Rundle: About Memory, curated by Erica de Greef, opens at Braamfontein's Afronova gallery on 24th June 2011, at 6pm with an event titled “Climbing out the Wall *2”, and opening by Dion Chang.

This interdisciplinary exhibition presents reflections as constructions of memory in the work of fashion designer Clive Rundle, through a study of the multiple sites of fashion that make up the collective work of this well-known fashion designer, namely; the studio, the shop, the show, the fashion shoot, the magazine, and more closely, the patterns, the sketches, the mirrors and the fashioned objects.

“I am interested in the complex negotiation that occurs in the reading of the surfaces of fashion”, says de Greef, “and especially, in the work of Clive Rundle, where fragments of the past continually confront the present moment”. Underpinning this exhibition is a notion of time and layering, as a palimpsest or as a network of memory traces that reference loss and absence in the considered constructions of fashion: - in a jacket, a sleeve, a textile, or a bricolage of pieces.

The month-long exhibition (24 June 2011 – 24 July 2011) will include two walkabouts and two film screenings. See venue details and dates below.

Exhibition Curator: Erica de Greef lives in Johannesburg, and works in the inter-disciplinary fields of fashion, art and academia. Currently reading for a Masters in Fine Arts at Witwatersrand University, Johannesburg, de Greef has developed this research field through lecturing at LISOF, Johannesburg, in various subject-specialisations. She has participated in a number of academic conferences in South Africa and internationally, has curated a number of fashion exhibitions collaborating with designers, museums, galleries and students, and has published in the cultural and critical context of South African fashion research. This exhibition forms a part of her Masters thesis project.

Exhibition Production: Mark Erasmus trained at the Art Foundation in Johannesburg, and for more than a decade has researched the intensity, viscosity and anatomy of colour, the ambiguity of order and chaos, and the functions of form and image. Erasmus' solo exhibition at Obert Contemporary (Colour Terra, 2005) and the ongoing development of conceptual work reflects his diverse practice as skilled painter, photographer and sculptor. As a freelance designer and conceptual consultant, recent projects include working with The Colour Library, Mushroom Productions, Showtex, and in conceptual collaboration, with Clive Rundle (Graffiti 2010, Climbing out the Wall 2009).

Karl Gietl comes back to Joburg for a solo exhibition of his latest paintings, taking us for a journey through downtown's backstreets to suddenly emerge on the bustling boulevards of the city and, in the same breath, enter the intimacy of a bedroom.

Gietl paints the terrible beauty of life in visual tales happening when people get together, with bliss and desire, death and memory. Le Café de la Vie!

The exhibition features thirty-two richly layered compositions painted by Karl Gietl with superb skills and commendable patience, bringing to life his very own universe, somewhere over the rainbow.

Billie Zangewa's new series of silk tapestries inspired by her life experiences radiates sensuality and power. With works like The Rebirth of the Black Venus or Desarming Mars, Billie comes out even more aware as a triumphant African woman, conscious of her roots and fully in touch with her environment. Her intimate universes meet the public realm in daring and original silk tapestries with strong narratives and presence.

Recent international exhibitions in Europe, The United States and Japan as well as acquisitions by major collections further establish Billie Zangewa as one of the most desirable and sought-after contemporary artist.

Afronova is pleased to launch its new gallery space in Braamfontein with a solo exhibition by young but already acclaimed photographer Musa Nxumalo.

Born in Soweto in 1986, Musa Nxumalo first came into the spotlight as the recipient of the fourth Edward Ruiz Award 2008 with his debut exhibition Alternative Kidz in 2009, produced under the auspices of the Market Photo Workshop and funded by AngloGold Ashanti. Portraying urban black youth who choose to identify with alternative culture, both culturally dissonant and individually liberating, his startling black and white photographs instantly captured the attention of local and international collectors and curators and features in important exhibitions in Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands.

Musa Nxumalo's new series of colour photographs was created on various occasions such as trips to and from regular hanging–out spots and visits to families outside Johannesburg. But in most cases…it is planned “gatherings” with friends as usual, a bit like a young contemporary Malick Sidibé in urban South Africa. His photography integrates documentary and fine art photography practices used to explore and reflect on both the society he grew up in and currently live in as well as on his identity and personal perspective as a young black man living in South Africa. Nxumalo's images research the identity of this generation that is living in this particular juncture in South Africa, by scrutinising and reflecting the flux of self-defined identities within cultural practices generally not associated with ‘township culture', such as jazz or kwaito, but instead with alternative practices such as rock music.

Nontsikelelo Veleko

Born in 1977, Nontsikelelo Veleko lives and works in Johannesburg. She is a highly original photographer and project manager/co-coordinator at the Market Photo Workshop, where she previously trained in the art of photography. In the last couple of years, Lolo has been gathering a great deal of attention with her striking work entitled Beauty is in the eyes of a beholder. She was a nominee and finalist of the MTN New Contemporary Artists in 2003 and has since been participating in important local and international exhibitions. Already this year, her photographs were exhibited in the landmark exhibition Snap Judgements: New Positions in Contemporary African Photography at the International Center of Photography in New York and in Personae Scenarios-the new African Photography, Brancolini Grimaldi Arte Contemporanea in Rome. Also recently she was participating in well publicized shows like Click at the Goodman Gallery in Johannesburg, or Unsettled, 8 South African photographers in Denmark, Sweden and South Africa, as well as other exhibitions and projects in Switzerland, the United States and of course at home.

A Series of travels is the title chosen by artist Karl Gietl for the collection of paintings related to the last year and a half he spent in the south of France. The paintings don't necessarily deal with the physical aspect of travel to specific locations, but more about people and environments. The works are about where 'travel/voyage' takes one, in the mind.

The works featured in the exhibition are about the people one meets in the bar at the end of the street in a foreign city, but one has no idea which city you are in. A series of Travels are about memories. The past, the present...

Opening at Afronova, Friday 23 October, 18:00 to 20:00 followed by The Artists Dinner at Gramadoelas. Exhibition runs until Saturday 21 November.
